What does psychedelic therapy cost for someone in San Diego?

Psilocybin therapy isn't legal in California outside approved research, so San Diegans choose among ketamine treatment, a registered trial, or a licensed session in Oregon or Colorado. Sourced prices run from about $550 per ketamine infusion to a median of $1,900 for one Oregon psilocybin session, and the insurance data we found show wide coverage mainly for Spravato.

What happens in a legal psilocybin session in Oregon or Colorado?

Both states use three parts led by a licensed facilitator. Oregon classifies its services as nonmedical, yet in the 2025 mystery-shopper study, staff asked callers detailed questions about psychiatric history, and none allowed unsupervised use13.

  1. Preparation. Required in Oregon before any session: intake, informed consent, a client bill of rights, safety and transportation plans, and a standardized client information form whose answers can make you ineligible7. Colorado defines it as a meeting with the facilitator before the administration session8.
  2. Administration. In Oregon, this session at a licensed service center is the only time you may buy and consume psilocybin, and you must stay a minimum time7. In Colorado it happens at a healing center or another location the law allows8.
  3. Integration. Oregon facilitators follow up within 72 hours and offer integration sessions7. Colorado's law names integration as one of the three parts of "natural medicine services"8.

Expect a wait and a possible no: the Oregon study found a median of 9.25 days to an intake appointment13, and Oregon facilitators "may decline services to clients for any reason"7. For who uses Oregon's program, see our report on Oregon's 2026 client data.

How do you check a California practitioner's license?

A license means someone can legally provide therapy or prescribe ketamine. It doesn't let anyone give you psilocybin outside an approved study23.

  1. Get the full name and license type: MD for physicians; LMFT, LCSW or LPCC for most therapists; or psychologist.
  2. Search DCA License Search. The Department of Consumer Affairs tool covers more than 30 DCA boards and bureaus and shows whether a license is current, expired or has faced disciplinary action11.
  3. Doctors: use the Medical Board of California's license verification; the board also takes complaints.
  4. Therapists: the Board of Behavioral Sciences licenses LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and educational psychologists.
  5. Psychologists: the Board of Psychology licenses psychologists and psychological associates.

What are the red flags in a California "psilocybin therapy" offer?

Giving you psilocybin outside an approved study is a felony under HSC 11379, whoever offers it: guide, coach or licensed therapist2. Watch for:

  • A provider who supplies mushrooms for a "guided session," "ceremony" or "retreat" in San Diego County.
  • Claims that a church, a "sacrament" or a city vote makes it legal. See what isn't legal access on our access map and the mushroom church section of our scene guide.
  • A "study" you can't find on ClinicalTrials.gov, or whose team can't explain its approval. California requires Research Advisory Panel review3.
  • No license number you can confirm in DCA License Search11.

Our California penalties guide lists the charges.

Where can you get legal integration support?

Talking through a past experience is ordinary talk therapy: HSC 11379 targets transporting, selling, furnishing, administering or giving away the drug, not conversation2. Psychedelic Support Inc runs a private directory of integration-trained providers whose disclaimer says they "do not break U.S. laws"17. It isn't a state registry, so check any name above.

Fireside Project's peer line, 62-FIRESIDE (623-473-7433), takes calls and texts daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pacific; it "is not a suicide hotline"16. In a crisis, call or text 988 or call the County's Access and Crisis Line, 1-888-724-7240; call 911 in an emergency15. More lines are in our bad trip help guide.
